Just because a product is for sale doesn’t mean it’s safe, says the man leading the Consumer Product Safety Commission. “I do know in talking to people, they often think because it’s on the shelves, it’s been pre-approved by the government, which is not the case,” said CPSC Chair Alexander Hoehn-Saric. He urged consumers to do their homework before making purchases. “It’s easy and fast to check for recalls and obtain product safety information,” he said, pointing to government websites saferproducts.gov and cpsc.gov as reliable sources.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has approved a new federal mandatory safety standard that will ensure crib mattresses, as well as after-market mattresses used in play yards and cribs, are safer for babies. By the fall of 2022, crib mattresses and after-market mattresses used in play yards and portable cribs, will be required to meet the new federal safety standard which addresses several hazards, such as lacerations from coil springs and excessively soft mattresses.

Thousands Of Unsafe Toys, Cosmetics And Electrical Items Seized By UK Standards Officers In 10 Months

More than £732,000 worth of consumer goods including toys, cosmetics and electrical items which pose a health risk have been seized by Trading Standards officers in Gloucestershire. This includes 7,511 toys for young children with sharp edges or choke hazards, play putty with traces of heavy metal and 4,000 items of women’s clothing which had sharp edges to fastenings. The officers also seized more than 5,145 electrical goods including spin dryers which work with the door open.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced new steps in its ongoing effort to eliminate deadly hazards from residential elevators. Three elevator manufacturers – Bella Elevator, LLC, Inclinator Company of America, and Savaria Corporation have worked with CPSC to announce three separate voluntary recalls of about 69,000 residential elevators.
